Ah the dreaded yeast infection... I wish we didn’t have to talk about it let alone get it, but that would just be too easy wouldn’t it?!
We all get them so we might as well understand why and how we can clear them naturally.
WHAT IS A YEAST INFECTION?
Our bodies are ecosystems that contain trillions of different types of bacteria. The bacteria found in our gut is of most importance. They provide the first line of defence as part of our immune system by keeping other larger more harmful bacteria and viruses in check and away from our bloodstream. They help us digest our food and provide us with nutrients like vitamin B and K.
When there is an imbalance of these all too important bacteria, yeast or fungus start to grow in larger numbers in the gut and in the vagina causing an infection. In many cases this causes an unpleasant itchiness which often is accompanied by whitish discharge and sometimes odour. Just what we need down there!
An imbalance of bacteria can come from an overload of toxicity, such as chemicals found in the air that we breathe, and in our food. It very easily happens when we take medications such as antibiotics. A change in hormones can sometimes be the culprit as well.
Lesser known reasons include meat consumption as conventionally raised meats contain a low dosage of anti-biotics. The use of products like Splenda have been observed in scientific studies to reduce the good intestinal bacteria by as much as half, from one single serving sized packet! The really bad news with all of this is that intestinal bacteria take years to return to the intestines, adhere and thrive. In the meantime, we will be left vulnerable to infections of all kinds, allergies, loss of nutrients and an overgrowth of yeast!
The conventional treatment for a fungal/ yeast infection is an over the counter medication, Clotrimazole which usually comes in a suppository tablet and a topical cream. According to Drugs.com this medication can be harmful to the liver in some cases and can cause side effects such as stomach cramps and nausea, skin rashes, blistering, burning, itching and irritation. These don’t happen to everyone of course, as I have never experienced them myself, so you may just be ok.
NATURAL/ ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT
I am always looking for the most natural approach because that’s what resonates with me so here it is:
1. Eliminating sugars
This is always the #1 most important step. Only once we eliminate or minimize our sugar intake can we really get these critters under control.
This is best done by eliminating all refined sugars from the diet and minimizing the intake of grains.
Grains: corn, wheat, rye, oats, rice and barley. Potatoes will also be helpful to reduce as they are very starchy and break down into sugar.
2. Garlic - the antibacterial/ fungal master
The quickest remedy is to gently peel a piece, being careful not to cut into it and pop it into your vagina, leaving it there overnight. Yes you will have what I like to call ‘garlic vag’ in the morning but well worth it! Your itchiness will likely be complete history by then.
Getting it out can be the fun part. The easiest way I’ve found is to hunker down and push like you would a good poop first thing in the morning. Some prefer the 'soap on a rope' method of piercing and tying it with a string. The string will sometimes cut through the clove when you go to pull it out, leaving you empty handed.
Another idea is to chop up raw garlic and shoot it back with an ounce of water or orange juice before bed.
3. Candigen by Genestra
A human strain probiotic suppository that is easy to use and works like a charm! You can use this instead of the garlic or even better as a follow up the next evening. There isn’t much warning as to when a yeast infection will make itself known so you may not have any of this product in your fridge, in which case you can use the garlic until you get some. A great combo.
4. Berberis Formula by Genestra
This herbal preparation containing berberine is indicated for parasitic, bacterial/ viral infections, and candidiasis. Perfect.
From personal experience this formula is a life saver and warrants a spot in your cupboard for a variety of infections from a simple cold to a killer viral infection. This is a keeper.
These are what help keep a healthy normal environment in the intestinal tract by keeping yeast and fungi in check and helping your immune system stay strong.
Probiotics, meaning 'pro-life', need to be replenished after each course of antibiotics, but more importantly they act as a preventative to traveller’s diarrhoea and other bugs contracted in a variety of ways when taken regularly.
Probiotics are needing to be alive in order to have an effect on the gut and for them to be alive they must be kept cold.
I prefer to use Genestra’s HMF line because they are made with human strain probiotics which means they adhere to the gut lining for maximum benefit and each batch is tested before it is accepted into the warehouse for distribution.
I also like BioK as it is a live probiotic food which comes in a variety of bases such as rice, milk, soy and coconut.
Yeast infections are fairly simple to take care of but are also a sign of an important bigger picture. If we can address it at the root, we have a much better chance in keeping our defences strong, bugs and viruses out, and as new research indicates, prevent bigger troubles ahead such as diabetes, cholesterol, and allergies.
'Moon time' because a woman's cycle is governed by the moon. There are 13 moons per year as a woman will get her period 13 times in that year.
I love being as green as possible to minimize my footprint but there are some things that can seem hard to compromise on. Your choice in underwear protection, I shall call it, can seem like one of them. I am all for using what I am most comfortable with. This wasn't one of those difficult guilt bearing choices, in fact it quickly became my preference.
At night we need a little different protection than during the day and here is an awesome newish undie protector!

I feel a brother energy, interesting. It feels like you have a brother that you are paying back, that you are karmically trying to repair the relationship with using money.
(here I began to tear up. I felt something)
Are you allowed to make more money than your parents?
Is it disrespectful to do so?
Two things are happening that I have not mentioned;
Upon giving him an answer, he can tell if that answer doesn't quite feel right for me and asks me about it. Every time it doesn't quite feel right when I say it, he catches me!
After finding the answer to these questions, he asks if I will allow him to clear the energy around that, then he doeshis clearing process, not entirely sure what that entails.

Sometimes I find myself in need of a good tune up!
There was a time when I actively sought out energy work. I can say with confidence that it helped me get to where I am today in many ways. Mainly it has developed my emotional maturity, aided me in overcoming pains and trauma I was experiencing and really helped me gain perspective as to why I was going through what I was.
I suppose life started rolling a lot more smoothly at some point and seeking out energy clearing got overlooked.
The beginning of 2017 brought about the end of a really important relationship in my world. Important in the way that it was filled with so many lessons for me to learn and grow from but also in the way that I was left with a broken heart as I truly thought I had found "the one". Heavy, I know.
My energy was less than ideal by this point. My heart was heavy, my excitement of beginning the next phase of my life with my person shattered, my perspective unfocused. My reality changed in an instant and I wasn't prepared.
I spent some time grieving of course but eventually I got to a place where I didn't want to grieve anymore, I was ready to feel differently and start my path of recovery but my emotions and thoughts didn't seem to be on the same page as they kept cycling through the same old stuff.
After listening to me rehash my relationship over and over, my friend Jessica reminded me of energy work and gave me the number to a healer whom she trusts.
I booked a session immediately. A one hour session over the phone is all it took and things started to change.
My focus with our session was geared towards my breakup, abundance or lack there of, and how it all tied into my relationship with my mother. My blog on the specifics will be posted next.
During the session I began feeling lighter like I was given more space to breathe and be me. The following day emotions compounded and came to a head. I began to feel nauseous and it was like something was digging into my chest. It got so overwhelming that I felt compelled to call the x and see how he was. Let's just say that phone call wasn't very positive and once it was over I cried. It felt like my tears released everything overwhelming and the storm was over. I could breathe again.
My emotions released and I could now see clearer. I began recognising the lessons available to me and healing.
A couple weeks later I had the opportunity to visit my parents for a week and I took it. I learned more about my mom and dad in this one week than perhaps ever before. It was radical.
In summation, I learned how my x's behavior towards me represented that of my own mothers. I now have a far greater understanding of the dynamic we share and who I need to be toward myself in order to fill the approval I have been seeking from my parents for as long as I can remember.
The clarity I have with my last relationship is far greater than I could have imagined.
I also know that I am not responsible for helping those I love grow emotionally or spiritually. Everyone has their own journey and time-line and they get to decide what they want next. I need to allow people to hit rock bottom (if that is where they are going) so they can be driven to change and choose to pursue it themselves.
This has been an emotional time and a time filed with exponential growth. Would I have reached this place without the energy clearing? Quite possibly yes but I am certain it would have taken far longer to achieve.
I want to get to where I want to go swiftly, if my relationship is over I want to grieve and learn and be onto the next . After all, there are new people to meet and places to explore, and I won't be here forever so time is of the essence. Also... there is something to be said for feeling good.
Recently someone asked me why I chose to take Holistic Nutrition in school and how I use it in my profession today. Here is my response;
Somewhere around the age of 24 I got sick with digestive disturbances, an Epstein Barr viral infection and eventually mononucleosis. I was in bad shape. To make things worse, not one doctor or specialist nailed down any of this, instead they sent me home scratching their head. After barium tests, colonoscopies, biopsies, and offers of pain numbing drugs, I saw a Naturopath, then an Acupuncturist, and finally the person who guided me more than anyone else; a talented Chiropractor. After much of my own research on health, he suggested I go to school for what I seemed so passionate about; food.
After 4 years of college and 1 at SFU, I was back in school. Something I never thought I would ever do again, let alone be super excited about it. I loved it. For the first time I loved school. My plan back then was to open a super trendy yet healthy restaurant with my new knowledge.
Instead I chose to continue my schooling: I studied Auricular Medicine with Doctor Mikhael Adams in Milton Ontario. A background in medicine or holistic nutrition was a must. I had come to the idea that changing your food could change your health and positively affect your body but there still seemed to be a missing piece. Auricular Medicine is that piece for me. With it, one can assess the body and determine exactly what the body needs in order to return to self-healing and auto-regulating. Whether it be emotional, spiritual, or physical, Auricular is a vehicle to assess the body, peel the layers and get to the root of what ails a person.
CSNN also lead me to want to strengthen myself spiritually and intuitively so I found myself taking classes such as Theta Healing, Heart Resonance Therapy, Tuning Forks, and what is an ongoing big part of my life today, the Personal Success Institute (PSI).
Currently I have a beautiful office in my home as well as a secondary space in the Kushala Yoga and Wellness Center, both in Port Moody. I offer full assessments which include Auricular Medicine as well as a nutrition program complete with recipes tailored specifically for each client. I also offer holistic nutrition packages in case a client is looking to focus solely on diet.
When a client calls to say; I feel terrific, I pooped for the first time in a week, I’ve been pooping 3 times a day ever since, I have more energy, I lost 5 pounds, I’m no longer bloated, my periods are no longer painful, my injury has healed and I am back on the mountain… this is my inspiration, my motivation and my fuel to do what I do.
In future I will be teaching Auricular Medicine for Doctor Adams, I will also be facilitating workshops for PSI, and continuing to assess clients from home!
On my spare time I am an actress, I work behind the scenes in BC Film, I speak on nutrition for a local French radio program, I am learning to be a hiphop dancer, and I’m a bit of a spiritual gangster!
pounding back Advil just to cope while resting around the house. Until I remembered arnica. After one day of taking a homeopathic preparation of arnica consistently, I was off Advil and noticed significant relief. The healing increased daily, until I was back to normal. It truly was amazing.
A broken rib:
I met my co-worker Michael just after he had broken his collar bone. He showed me his green and yellow bruised battle wounds immediately upon introducing himself, so I reached for my arnica. Michael said that he was finally experiencing some healing after he’d been taking it for just one day. He’s back to lifting again after a few short weeks and his pain is gone.
A rolled ankle:
This story is what prompted me to write this post. My co-worker Jimmy rolled his ankle yesterday. Swollen, painful etc etc. I had some arnica cream on me, so I gave him the tube, explained it would help with healing and to try raising his foot if he could. He asked to take it home so he could apply it before bed. Of course bud, I said. He arrives to work this morning, hands me the tube and says, and I quote... "I don't know what the f*@k is in there, but it WORKS. No pain. Nothing. Like I never rolled it. You should market that!" Now he's getting me to text a picture of it to our first aid lady because he told her it was a miracle “crack cream”. So Jimmy is walking around today like nothing ever happened.
Arnica is useful for the healing of hard and soft tissue, decreases swelling and PAIN and increases blood reabsorption. Available in topical cream or homeopathic preparation. The sooner it is taken or applied after the injury has taken place, the better.
As I was quickly running out of my sun screen I began lathering up in coconut oil first before applying sunscreen and noticed a couple things; my sunscreen went farther, and my thirsty skin was quenched. Win – win. Plus coconut oil carries an SPF of 7 AND acts as a bug repellant. BONUS
When I returned home, I kept applying coconut oil to my skin each time I jumped out of the shower. Not only has my skin not pealed at all, it is moist and fabulous, and it smells GOOD!
Something for my pits?
The most awesome thing I found to do with it is make deodorant. Yes deodorant!
I have been applying coconut oil under my arms to heal a shaving mishap and then I took a closer look at the AWESOME deodorant I am currently using. Main ingredient: coconut oil.
Here is an easy recipe that will mimic this awesome deodorant for you to make at home.
I will guarantee; this will be the most effective deodorant (not antiperspirant) you have tried to date and it nourishes your skin and smells terrific.
1/2 cup virgin coconut oil
4 tablespoons of beeswax pastilles (you can purchase these in your local honey shop or online)
1/2 cup non-gmo cornstarch (or tapioca or arrowroot, a little less if you add the clay)
1/2 cup baking soda (Bob’s Red Mill works great)
1 teaspoon of shea or coconut butter (optional for moisturizing properties)
1 teaspoon of kaolin clay powder (optional for smooth texture)
30 drops of tea tree or rosemary essential oil
10 drops of essential oils of choice (lavender, lemon, rose -if desired)
1 vitamin E softgel (optional for extended shelf life)
2 little glass jars (in case you want to give one away)
Disclaimer –notice the colour of the essential oil you are using as this may be the colour that ends up on your white blouse’s arm pits L Fear not, before tossing in the laundry, give the pits of your shirt a quick scrub with cold water and a stain stick and it will come right out.

Go out into the sun
Take 5 minutes and walk. Breathe. Fresh air, sun and exercise have an incredible effect on our mental state. The sun light triggers the brain to release the hormone serotonin which boosts mood and focus.
Eat yellow or orange fruits or veggies
Homegrown or organic produce –the real stuff, has all kinds of ingredients that can help protect the body from oxidative stress and so on.
The colors yellow and orange are especially awesome because they relate to the solar plexus and sacral chakras which relate to emotional stability and our ability to digest our life. The energy of these chakras allows you to meet challenges and move forward in your life.
Eating these colours together is extra powerful.
Meditate even if time is an obstacle
Meditation is a way to turn off the mind for a moment. When we have trouble with our laptop or phone, the first question we are asked is always “have you rebooted it?” A reboot can do amazing things. And it’s surprisingly simple and can be done in just a few minutes. Literally.
For those of you who can’t find time in your day, let me suggest your personal office, aka the bathroom! You can plug in to a trusted source and be completely guided and all you have to do is listen, or do it yourself. Easy. Either way your ‘throne’ experience will be enhanced!

Recall why you are grateful
Even though it may be tough to see at times, any of us reading this blog likely have MUCH to be grateful for. Thinking of those things that are in our life, that enhance our life, really does help us feel good about ourselves and how lucky we are to be who we are.
When we are grateful we are in line with the universe. If we want to create our lives by design, we begin by being grateful for what it is we would like to have as if we already have it. To this the universe responds.
The best way to do this is to write them down. It keeps you on track and you can reread them and feel good all over again. ie. I am so grateful for the man in my life, he looks after me, is a great communicator and always wants to pay for dinner.
This is truly one of my favorite ways of feeling good.
Listen to something funny
Keep those old Adam Sandler CDs in your car in case they can come in handy or YouTube some funny cat videos, or whatever makes you laugh.
A good laugh truly is good medicine. How can you be angry or mad once you’ve had a good belly laugh? A good belly laugh looks like this:
Eat or drink some greens
This is for the angry in your day. Red is associated with anger, and liver is the seat of anger in the body. Greens provide many compounds that support the liver.
Green is known to cancel out the color red, and so it is used in makeup etc. So as a food, green will aid to cool down or cancel out red.
Green is also the color of the heart chakra which is associated with joy.
Rub your hand through your hair
Like you would pet a dog or a cat, start from your forehead and firmly pet yourself toward the back of your head. This brings energy to the governor vessel meridian which is responsible for governing the qi or energy of all the yang meridians in the body and is closely tied to the brain. This helps to release emotion.
Beautiful dark chocolate stimulates the brain to release endorphins, hormones that produce the feeling of pleasure and wellbeing.
Learn to tap. Otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). It stimulates the body’s meridians and energy flow. It takes just a few seconds and it is very effective!

It is always good to feel emotions you are having. Feel them, hear them and then once it is time, move on. Being stuck in an emotional pattern isn’t fun or good for the body.
These are tips that can help you move through those moments, the little things in life that would be better if you weren’t upset. Enjoy this day!

My pipes were clogged! But why?
Well let’s see… I was a teenager! I went out drinking with my friends 3 nights of the week (I’m French Canadian –this was a serious affair), I ate fast food most of those nights, drank energy drinks on campus and I smoked the odd thing or two. Oh yeah, I also worked in a restaurant where I ate many dinners of mash potatoes and snacked on loaves of bread and butter. Yum.
I’m going to take a risk and say toxic internal environment
Kids heal quickly and livers are made for detoxing the system so why would this be translating to a rash on my face? As a teen with a modeling contract for Asia this didn’t bode well!
We’ve all seen pictures of our grandparents when they were teens right? Ever notice any pimples or rashes on their faces? Not so much.
Air quality –we are exposed to airborne toxins the minute we walk out of our homes. If that wasn’t enough, we also have toxins residing inside our homes due to household cleaners and plastics etc.
Food –We are eating foods that have been sprayed with pesticides by guys in hazmat masks and suits. This just can’t be good, can it?
Water –that thing we consume that cleanses our cells -contains chlorine and often times fluoride just to name a few.
Our grandparents with the spotless faces had very different circumstances growing up. Synthetic pesticides were only developed in the 1940s once my granny was already in her 30s. Many foods they ate came straight from their back yard year-round garden, which she weeded herself daily.
Conclusion –my liver wasn’t designed to clean up a chemical cocktail.
How does this affect my moon time?
My what?? My Metis friend Madelaine (aka Strong Earth Woman) taught me that our periods coincide with the cycles of the moon and so she refers to it as moon time, which I find so much more fun to say!
If toxicity was building up in my system that would be enough to cause an imbalance in the good bacteria found in my gut. Did I mention I was given 6 rounds of antibiotics by my dermatologist for my rash prior to seeing my GP? Definitely my beneficial bacteria were less then plentiful!
Candida (fungal overgrowth in the intestines) creates inflammation in the digestive tract and ovaries. It releases a by-product that mimics the effects of estrogen which can be responsible for breast tenderness, headaches, heavy bleeding, ovarian cysts and even hair loss and infertility!
3 ways you can improve your moon time;
1. Limit sugar consumption. Sugar feeds yeast, weakens the immune system, and blocks hormone receptors
2. Include fermented foods and beverages in your diet as a source of beneficial bacteria. Such as:
